The Port of Livorno is a multipurpose port, able to receive all kinds of vessels and to handle all kinds of good, including passenger traffic, which can be divided into Cruise ships and ferries.
In 1994, the port of Livorno has been reorganised and improved by the local Port Authority (landlord concept) which divided the port in specialized terminals that are nowadays managed directly by the single terminal operators.
Being one of the main Italian port in the basin of the Mediterranean and it is connected to more than 300 International ports and markets of the world. The main steamship lines calling at our port are: Zim Lines, Yang Ming, Maersk, Canmar, Delmas, NSCSA, Naviera Pinillos, Grimaldi, Lykes Lines, CTE, Costa Container Lines & Coral Lines, CSAV.
In 2008, the traffic of the Port of Livorno was more than 34 millions of tons of goods with a growth of 9%. The container goods contributed with a growth of 12% compared to 2007. Also the motorways of the sea and RO-RO have an important growth of about 20%.
The passengers traffic, from Cruise ships and ferries reached more than 3 millions of passengers in 2007 and an increased positive trend was also confirmed in 2008.
After the terroristic attack to the twin towers in 2001, the Port of Livorno was the first port in Italy a plan of vulnerability, as well as anti-terroristic equipment. Since last November it is part of the Us Customs Container Security Initiative – C.S.I. – program.
Livorno Port Authority is aware that the growing importance of port activities must be supported by an environmental policy able to mitigate the impact of the economic activities. Livorno Port Authority elaborated a “green port” policy and an environmental declaration. Finally, the Port Authority of Livorno has got the ISO 14.000 and the EMAS certification was confirmed.
