Port of Algeciras Bay
Port of Algeciras Bay
The Port of Algeciras Bay –Spain´s number one port- is located in an exceptional geo-strategic point. On the crossroads of the world´s main cargo shipping lanes, our Port is made up of a “hub” platform in the West Mediterranean for container transhipment.
Our traffic evolution over the last few years has allowed us to become one of the main Mediterranean ports both in total throughput and container handling. In 2008, the Port of Algeciras Bay made history by breaking through the record 74.5-million total throughput figure, as well as handling 3.3-million TEUs.
In order to be able to guarantee the necessary port infrastructure to meet traffic growth, the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay (APBA), which manages the ports of Algeciras, La Linea de la Concepción and Tarifa, continues to be strongly committed to developing our facilities. The new infrastructure on Isla Verde Exterior and Campamento –currently under full swing- will provide more than 200 hectares of new port surface area together.
Isla Verde Exterior, the most important development area of the Port of Algeciras Bay, will have a common user terminal from 2010. Besides, an oil terminal and a ro-ro terminal are another two important projects set to convert this area into almost a whole new port for the Bay of Algeciras.
With regard to Campamento, given the unique nature of this port facility, APBA foresees its future use in the construction of prototype engineering works such as the Monaco Floating Dock, built here to expand the Port of La Condomine in 2002, or the first off-shore liquid gas terminal in the world: Adriatic LNG Project, finished in 2008.
The competitive strategic location of the Port of Algeciras Bay has transformed our port into a great logistics hub port that is one of the most significant assets in the Mediterranean. The third main project of APBA is the commissioning of the Logistics Activity Zone (LAZ), set to meet the port´s needs and the needs of the Bay´s industrial complex (the second-biggest in Spain).
