Description

CLIMEPORT FINAL CONFERENCE

On March 1 2012, the CLIMEPORT Project Final Conference will take place in Valencia (Spain), under the title of: “Climate Change between Port-City relationships” and within the framework of the Energy Trade Fair (Egetica-Expoenergética) held in Feria Valencia.
The CLIMEPORT project, led by the Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia (Valencia Port Authority) in which participates other Mediterranean port authorities such as: the Bay of Algeciras Port Authority (Spain), Marseille Port Authority (France), Livorno Port Authority (Italy), Piraeus Port Authority (Greece), Koper Port Authority and two other energy agencies, AVEN (Spain) and GOLEA (Slovenia), enjoys the support of the ITE (Spain) as a technological partner. This project also forms part of the MED Programme and is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The CLIMEPORT fundamental objective is to identify the tools that allow us to minimize the GHG emissions arised from the regular port activities and to monitory its further evolution.

At this international Conference, the project partners will present the work carried out up to date. They will show the results obtained concerning to the greenhouse gas emission situation of each port and explaining the methods used. These methods are currently being compared with those of other international initiatives.
By applying these methods at the participating ports, the following result has been obtained:
1.    Inventory of the Greenhouse Gases (GHG) Emissions: the potential sources of greenhouse gas emissions have been identified and the corresponding emissions matched with each source, thus obtaining an inventory of the emissions caused by the activities for each port.
2.    Calculation of the Carbon Footprint: We have been able to determine the equivalent in tonnes of CO2 (direct and indirect) that is given off by port areas, enabling us to calculate the carbon footprint of each port taking part.
3.     Benchmarking and Best Practices: at each port, we have identified those measures that are already being implemented or are to be implemented which facilitate a reduction in emissions from the sources studied.
We consider these methods as a Pilot Project in which all of the studies and results will be presented by each project partner. Furthermore, various prestigious European and international institutions of reference in the port area, such as the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) or the International Ports and cities Association (AIVP), will take part and will highlight the importance of the fight against climate change within today’s international port sector. The programme will be completed with the presentation of practical cases of specific measures dealing with this issue which are already implemented in ports.
Given the commitment and experience that your organization has regarding the issues which are the focus of the Conference, its presence there would be a great satisfaction for us. The Conference is aimed at the management of ports and port companies who are actively interested in policies seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and who wish to share their experiences on this issue. More information can be found at the project website: www.climeport.com
The Provisional Programme is attached, containing information on the content and organization of the Conference. If you are interested in attending, please contact the project’s secretary office before the 20th February, in order to register.
